Mayday Mayport!
The campaign to rescue Mayport Village from harm's way and restore her previous vitality is underway!
May Day (May 1st) is the anniversary of Jean Ribault's entry into the area he named Mayport. In the nearly 450 years since then Mayport has had a rich history as a viable fishing village and tourist destination.
But mayday is also the international distress signal. It is a most appropriate use of that signal now. Something we have treasured in the past is in peril and in need of immediate help from her neighbors, near and far.
In 1998 Mayport was designated by the state of Florida as one of three waterfront communities in need of revitalization. We are closer to the reality of restoration and renewal today as a result of the dedicated citizens citywide, who are members of the Mayport Waterfront Partnership.
Since 2007 The Mayport Civic Association, with the support of the Mayport Waterfront Partnership, has strongly challenged plans that would assault the traditional life of the village.
Now it is your chance to help save the village!
